The Nordic Society for Veterinary Epidemiology (NOSOVE) is an informal organization with the vision of advancing veterinary epidemiology. The volunteering board aim to fulfill the vision by providing courses and opportunities to socialise and strengthen the network among post graduate students, researchers and others with an interest in epidemiology. Events are presented through the society network (blogspot).
NOSOVE started in 1988 as a collaboration between the Nordic countries Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, and has expanded to include the Baltic countries, but welcome members and participants from all countries.

This post will provide scientific programming and mathematical modelling within the Department of Epidemiological Sciences and across the Animal & Plant Health Agency (APHA). It is part of a small team within the Biomathematics and Risk Research group which provides advanced modelling, software development and scientific computing within the Agency. The job holder will help develop and support important applications including simulation models of animal disease spread, surveillance and management; transformation and classification of molecular biology data; and estimation of epidemiological parameters. The outputs from this work have had major impacts on animal disease control in the UK and its consequences.

The job holder will be expected to acquire and apply advanced expertise in computer programming, modelling, algorithm development, mathematics, and data manipulation, with careful attention to quality assurance approaches such as test-driven development. They must work with epidemiologists, scientists, veterinary advisors and policy advisors effectively and with enthusiasm, communicating clearly to work through complex issues and understanding a wide range of issues related to animal disease.

A degree in a Scientific, Computing or Numeric discipline is essential.

Experience of developing software for mathematical models or algorithms is essential.

Training or experience in Epidemiology or Biology is desirable.

Salary range: £29,970 - £34,760 per annum

Vacancy: Assistant/Associate Professor at Kansas State University

Kansas State University (KSU) announces the availability of two new tenure-track assistant/associate professor positions in biostatistics and in comparative pharmacometrics and/or biomathematics to work in the Institute of Computational Comparative Medicine (ICCM), which occupies a newly constructed state-of-the-art research laboratory complex in the College of Veterinary Medicine on KSU's Manhattan campus.

Research in the ICCM is interdisciplinary and focused on developing novel approaches to extrapolate drug, chemical and/or nanomaterial behavior from in vitro to in vivo systems and across species, with particular emphasis on domestic animals. Collaboration would also be possible with the co-located USDA supported Food Animal Residue Avoidance and Depletion (FARAD) program as well as the co-located Nanotechnology Innovation Center of Kansas State (NICKS). The incumbents to these positions would develop and apply modern computational and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic modeling solutions to problems in comparative pharmacology, drug delivery, antimicrobial chemotherapy, nanomaterial toxicology and biodistribution, as well as chemical food safety. Expertise is particularly sought in mixed-effect modeling from both statistical and pharmacokinetic perspectives, as well as physiological-based pharmacokinetic modeling (PBPK) interests. The job

The Top expert within the centre Z&O is directly placed under the head of the centre.
As a Top expert you have a knowledge-coordinating and knowledge-locking role for the three departments within the centre. You have a strong integrating role in cross-domain social issues and you will take the lead in acquisition initiatives. In addition, from your methodological background you guard the quality, integrate microbiological data (partly generated by new technologies) with quantitative risk assessment for answering infectious disease questions. To the outside world, you position your field of activity and research results in the scientific, governmental and social field.
More precisely the job includes the following activities:
·         (Co) drafting of the substantive vision and strategy of the Centre and the derived annual plan; 
·         Contributing to the actual implementation of the substantive plans and the project portfolio and to the innovation of the field and applied methodology in risk assessment / modelling, anticipating the trends relevant for the RIVM and the Centre;
·         Formulating relevant scientific topics in the area of ​​the Centre (zoonoses, microbiological food safety and environmental safety) in relation to the public health of infectious diseases. For this purpose, also guiding influence on official, political or social governors;

Knowledge, education, skills and view

You are an ambitious senior researcher with an academic background, PhD, with a solid methodological basis and preferably experience in the field of infectious diseases or microbiology (zoonoses, microbiological food safety or environmental safety)and public health. You have proven expertise in acquisition of (inter) national research projects with interdisciplinary specialists. You have practical knowledge and experience working in the triangle of knowledge/science, practice/implementation and policy/supervision. You have a thorough knowledge of and strategic vision in the field of microbiological risk assessment/modelling.

In addition:
           You are a generalist with a broad orientation on the field and an overview of the usefulness and limitations of microbiological techniques, biostatistics, and modelling and are able to apply the right mixture of techniques for the issues of commissioning bodies.

Job offer

We offer a full-time permanent position (possible trial period). The salary of the function group Senior Scientific researcher scale 15 is between €4768 (min) and €6726 (max), based on full-time employment (36 hours a week), excluding 8% holiday allowance.

Job description
As Assistant Professor your job is to do scientific research (approximately 60%) in addition to teaching (approximately 40%). Your research will focus on the population dynamics of infections in farm animal populations. You will develop and apply mathematical models to design infection experiments and field studies, and analyze the results of such models in order to provide a rationale for future intervention and prevention strategies, firmly based on mechanistic understanding. Cooperation with scientists from related disciplines (such as veterinary sciences, microbiology, immunology and epidemiology) is a crucial part of your task. You will teach subjects related to population dynamics of infections and statistics in the veterinary medicine curriculum as well as in the master Epidemiology. This challenging job requires integration of mathematics, epidemiology and statistics, as well as state-of-the art modeling expertise.
You will be a member of the chair Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases of the Department of Farm Animal Health (Prof Dr Arjan Stegeman). You will have the opportunity to build your own research group based on your solid track record of expertise, high quality publications, international collaboration and grant acquisition.

·         initiate, conduct, and supervise scientific research in the field of 'Population Dynamics of Infectious diseases';

The role is a teaching post with a remit to develop veterinary public health teaching in the Department in conjunction with the Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Public Health (VPH). The post-holder’s goal will be to drive the design and implementation of a new learning environment for VPH in Cambridge, building on the existing programme with its extensive government and industry links and taking advantage of the on-going world class, international VPH research in the Department. 

The post-holder will oversee VPH teaching as required under RCVS and EAEVE guidance (including epidemiology, transboundary epizootic diseases, zoonotic and food-borne diseases, emerging and re-emerging diseases, food hygiene and food technology), integrating as far as possible with other related subjects including Farm Animal Studies. This challenging role will also aim to support a new generation of Cambridge veterinary graduates to be better equipped to participate effectively in One Health issues at an international level.

The successful applicant will participate with other academic staff (including 2 diplomats of the European College of Veterinary Public Health), in the teaching of Veterinary Public Health to undergraduates in the Department, through the medium of lectures, practicals, abattoir visits, seminars and small group teaching. This will include responsibility for specified areas of veterinary public health, with the post-holder taking responsibility for food hygiene and food technology teaching for example. In addition, s/he will develop innovative approaches to the teaching of Veterinary Public Health; contribute to the integration of Farm Animal teaching with Veterinary Public Health, especially in relation to population medicine / epidemiology; contribute to the training of Clinical Training Scholars (Interns and Residents); undertake any other duties in connection with the teaching of Veterinary Public Health as are specified from time to time by the Head of Department or a person nominated by the Head of Department.

It is essential that the successful applicant should have a veterinary degree registerable with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons; have attained or be eligible to sit the forthcoming examinations for the European or American Diploma in Veterinary Public Health, or should have attained or be registered for an RCVS Certificate in Veterinary Public Health.


It is desirable that the successful applicant should have an Official Veterinarian qualification, or be prepared to take this qualification when in post; experience of veterinary public health activities in government, overseas, or industry-related contexts; some undergraduate teaching experience (for example, supervision of veterinary students on EMS).

One Health Summer School in Copenhagen 2014 - registration before April 9.

University of Copenhagen and the Technical University of Denmark are hosting a ‘One Health Summer School' with emphasis on approaches to control zoonoses and food safety.
It is a 5-ECTS course that will be held in Copenhagen, August 11-22, 2014 preceded by a 9-week e-learning part that will be accessed through a closed Coursera.org-site from April 28, 2014.
Master and PhD students are welcome, but other post-graduates who are interested are also welcome.
The only requirement is that you have a B.Sc. degree. Other backgrounds than veterinarian, medical and public health are also welcome.

STATISTICAL PRACTICE IN EPIDEMIOLOGY USING R

The course is intended for epidemiologists and statisticians who wish to use R (www.r-project.org<http://www.r-project.org>) for statistical modelling and analysis of epidemiological data. The aim of the course is to give participants access to a set of tools in current use by statisticians in epidemiology. The course requires fairly good understanding of statistical principles and some familiarity with epidemiological concepts and study types.

The course will be mainly practically oriented with more than half the time at the computer.

* Interface to other data formats. Data frames.
* Tabulation of data.
